Opt-In Requirements and Best Practices

The first step in a text message campaign is to secure consent. In the text world, consent means someone has knowingly agreed to receive texts from your organization. 

Consent via keyword: If you have set up a specific keyword, anyone who texts in that keyword has shown consent.

Everywhere that you share your keyword, you must include the following: 

  • Msg and data rates may apply 

  • XX msgs/mo

  • Reply STOP to your toll-free number to cancel


An example of a disclaimer below a call-to-action could read: 

Msg and data rates may apply. Outreach for spring, 3 msgs/mo. Reply STOP to 833-392-3453 to cancel.

Notice the way the example also explains what contacts are signing up for when they text in the keyword. That's important too. People should be aware that they're signing up for an outreach list.
